An itchy ear can be extremely annoying, making it hard to resist scratching or probing inside the ear. However, scratching or probing ear often worsens the problem. Repeated scratching can irritate the delicate skin of the ear canal, increase the risk of infection, and even damage the eardrum.
Avoid inserting fingers, cotton swabs, towels, or other objects into your ears. Instead, use safe and appropriate methods to relieve ear itchiness and address its underlying cause.
The ear is made up of three parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Ear itching usually occurs in the ear canal of the outer ear.

Causes of Itchy Ear and the Management
Ear itching usually results from irritation or inflammation of the ear canal. Finding and treating the underlying cause can help relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence.
- Earwax: The ear canal naturally removes earwax and debris. Using cotton swabs or other objects to clean the ears often pushes wax deeper and may cause blockage. Excess earwax can be softened with a few drops of mineral, olive, or baby oil. If buildup causes itching, discomfort, or pain, seek medical advice. Earwax also helps lubricate and protect the ear canal; too little wax can lead to dryness and itching.
- Moisture: Keep the ears as dry as possible. If water becomes trapped after bathing or showering, tilt your head to drain it out. A hairdryer on the lowest setting, held about 50 cm away, can also help remove moisture.
- Swimming: Frequent swimmers are more prone to itchy ears. Wearing a swim cap or earplugs can help keep the ears dry and reduce the risk of bacterial and fungal infections.
- Chemical irritants: Products such as shampoo, hairspray, body wash, and hair dye may irritate the ear canal. If needed, place a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly at the entrance of the ear before bathing.
- Hearing aids or plugs: Avoid wearing hearing aids or earplugs when the ears are wet, as trapped moisture encourages bacterial and fungal growth. Do not use them during an active ear infection.
- Skin conditions: Eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and fungal infections can affect the ears and cause persistent itching. These conditions may require both topical and systemic treatment.
- Allergens: Itchy ears may be caused by allergies to foods, pollen, dust, jewelry, or cosmetic products. Identifying and avoiding the trigger can help prevent symptoms. Medical treatment may be needed if the itching persists.
For occasional mild ear itching, individuals may try a simple self-care measure:
Place a few drops of lukewarm olive oil or other vegetable oil into the affected ear, leave it in for a few minutes, then tilt the head to the opposite side and allow the excess oil to drain onto a tissue. This method is only suitable for occasional mild itchiness and should NOT be used regularly.
Ear itching can sometimes become a chronic or recurrent problem. For persistent itchy ear, or accompanied by pain, discharge, hearing loss, or do not improve with self-care, individuals should consult an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist promptly to rule out infection or other ear disorders. Be particularly alert for the following warning signs of chronic ear disease:
- Ongoing itching in or around the ear
- Ear pain or discomfort
- Thick, flaky skin inside the ear canal
- Fluid or discharge coming from the ear
- Reduced hearing or ringing/buzzing sounds in the ear
Chinese Herbal Prescriptions for Itchy Ear
Conventional treatment for persistent itchy ear includes a course of specific ear drops and medications. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treats it based on disharmony pattern of individuals, the remedies for itchy ear are designed to eliminate the localized irritations and regulate internal organs at the same time.
From a TCM holistic view, the ears are closely linked to the kidney, lung, and meridian network. Healthy kidney essence supports good hearing, while strong lung qi helps keep the ear passages clear. The ears are a meeting point for many important meridians; the six yang meridians connect directly with the ears, while the six yin meridians communicate with them indirectly through their collaterals. Several extraordinary meridians, including the yin and yang heel vessels and the yang linking vessel, also have connections with the ears. Because of these extensive connections, ear problems are not caused only by local irritation; they also reflect imbalances within the internal body and overall health. Therefore, TCM treatment for itchy ear focuses not only on relieving local symptoms but also on restoring the balance and function of the internal organs. This holistic approach is beneficial to promote long-term recovery and overall well-being.
Three common disharmony patterns and the anti-itch remedies for itchy ear are as below.
Pathogens accumulated in ear orifice
Patients may have severe itching in one or both ears, sometimes with pain. The itching can be so intense that they scratch the ear until it bleeds. Common accompanying symptoms include a blocked sensation in the ear and low-pitched ringing sounds. Examination often reveals fungal debris and crusts in the ear canal. Once removed, the ear canal may be red, swollen, and discharge pus or fluid. The tongue is red and with greasy coating, and the pulse is taut.
Treatment principle should aim to disperse wind, detoxify, clear heat and resolve phlegm.
Sample prescription: Modified Figwort and Thunberg Fritillary Decoction plus paniculated swallow-wort root, cicada slough and caltrop fruit
Deficient-dryness itching
Patients may experience occasional itching inside the ear. The auricle (outer ear) may appear dry and shrunken, while the skin of the external ear canal and auricle becomes rough, dry, and flaky, often accompanied by scaling or peeling. The tongue is pale, and the pulse is taut.

Liver and kidney deficiencies along with pathogen attacking
Severe itching inside the ear that is often accompanied by ear fullness, tinnitus, fatigue, and lower back soreness. Examination may reveal grayish-brown or yellowish-white fungal debris in the ear canal. After removal, the canal may appear red, rough, and scaly. The tongue is pale and the pulse is taut and thready.
Treatment principle should aim to invigorate kidney and liver, disperse wind and detoxify.
Sample prescription: Modified Linking Decoction plus glabrous greenbrier rhizome, vitex fruit, epimedium, and acorus
The above herbal prescriptions are usually provided for oral intake; however, they can also be applied as herbal compression. When doing herbal compression, dip a towel in the hot solution and cover it on the affected ear, change another towel when it cools down, do this for 30 minutes every day.
Acupuncture Therapy for Itchy Ear
Acupuncture therapy activates qi and blood flowing, reduces swelling, and stops itching, which can speed up the healing and improve ear functioning. Physicians usually select major points along the triple burner and gall bladder meridians, including ting hui (Gb 2), er men (Sj 21), yi feng (Sj 17), wai guan (Sj 5), and he gu(Li 4). Apply with even techniques and retain the needles for 10 minutes. Stimulating daily, seven days are as one course of treatment.
Meanwhile, individuals are advised to stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Pickled vegetables, strong-smell meats, seafood, spicy and pungent food such as leek, garlic, Chinese chive, hot pepper, pepper, leaf mustard, ginger and curry should also be limited. Individuals should also avoid using unclean objects to pick or scratch their ears, as this may aggravate irritation and infection.
