Pain which is aggravated by pressure relates to the excess (shi) type and is caused mainly by invasion of exogenous and pathogenic (disease-causing) factors, obstruction of meridians, stagnation of qi (vital energy) and blood, intestinal parasites, retention of food or obstruction by phlegm.
Pain which is alleviated by pressure on acupuncture points is usually caused by malnutrition of the tendons and channels due to insufficient qi (vital energy) and blood and loss of yin essence. If the pain is relieved by warmth, the pain belongs to the cold type. If the pain is relieved by cold, it belongs to the heat type. Most migrating pain is due to invasion of collaterals by pathogenic wind; fixed pain is due to the obstruction of collaterals by cold-damp.
