The
Suwen is a dialogue between the Yellow Emperor and his medical advisors,
the chief advisor being Ch'i Po or Qi Bo. The Yellow Emperor poses a question
and the advisor answers. This book mainly deals with the areas of anatomy,
physiology, and therapy. According to this book, humans have five Zang organs
which relate to the yin principle. These are the liver,
heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. The other six organs are related
to the yang principle. These are the gallbladder,
stomach, small and large intestines, and the triple burner which
is not an organ. Rather, the triple burner relates to the digestive, cardiac,
respiratory and urinary functions of the body. Two other important concepts
mentioned in this book are Qi
(pronounced Chi) and the 12 channels called jingmai or meridians.
Qi is the energy that flows through meridians and is compared to water in
the Suwen
"Heaven is covered
with the constellations, earth with waterways, man with channels. When
heaven and earth are temperate, the waters are calm; when heaven is cold
and earth frozen, the waters stagnate, when heaven is warm and the earth
scorched, the waters boil; when the wind blows violently, the waters break
into waves." 1
