Zhang Zhongjing
Zhang Zhongjing, the 'Sage of Medicine'

During his time, epidemic infectious illnesses were prevalent and resulted in a lot of deaths. Zhang Zhongjing's interest in febrile illnesses stemmed from the fact that two thirds of his family (200 people) died, and the majority of these deaths were due to fevers. It was this situation that prompted Zhang to write the Shanghan Zabinglun(Discourse on Fevers and Miscellaneous Illnesses).
